The 40th Session of the Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses (CCNFSDU) was held in Berlin from 26 to 30 November 2018 and chaired by Dr. Anja Brönstrup and Ms Hilke Thordsen-Böhm (both German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture).
Over 400 delegates and observers from 74 member states, one member organisation (European Union) and 41 international organisations attended the meeting. Mr Hans-Joachim Fuchtel (Parliamentary State Secretary, Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture, Germany) opened the meeting with a welcoming address.
This year's meeting again focused, inter alia, on discussions on the Standard for Follow-up Formula for older infants and "products based on milk or plant protein for young children". The Committee dealt specifically with the requirements for composition, inter alia the protein quality, carbohydrate sources, Vitamin D, labelling aspects and other characteristics of these foods.
The Committee also paid special attention to the rules governing composition and other rules for ready-to-use therapeutic foods (RUTF) for infants and children from 6 to 59 months suffering from severe malnutrition. A physical working group (pWG) met all day to discuss this agenda item on 24 November 2018.
Moreover, the Committee deliberated on a definition of "biofortification". The Committee decided to pass on the definition it had prepared to the Codex Committee on Food Labelling (CCFL) in order to also clarify a possible use of the definition. The work is currently kept at Step 4.
It was also agreed to work out risk management options to minimise the levels of trans-fatty acids in foodstuffs that could be implemented within the Codex Alimentarius framework. The Committee also addressed specific questions concerning the nutrition labelling of foodstuffs for infants and young children and nutritional profiles.
The 41st CCNFSDU session will be held in Düsseldorf from 24 - 29 November 2019.
