The 33rd Session of the Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses (CCNFSDU) was held from 14 to 18 November 2011 in Bad Soden am Taunus and chaired by Dr. Pia Noble, Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMELV).
269 delegates and observers from 69 member states, one member organisation (European Union) and from 33 international non-governmental organisations attended the meeting that was opened by a welcoming address delivered by Mr. Peter Bleser, Parliamentary State Secretary, BMELV. The BMELV Division 313 was in charge of organising the CCNFSDU meeting that has been hosted by Germany since the committee had been established in 1966.
The CCNFSDU meeting was preceded by two meetings of physical working groups on 12 November 2011 to prepare the discussions in the plenary.
A key subject at this year's CCNFSDU discussions was the formulation of General Principles for Establishing Nutrient Reference Values (NRVs) for labelling purposes associated with risk of diet-related diseases (NCD). Major progress was made in this regard. After intensive discussion, the delegates also succeeded in adopting reference values for saturated fatty acids and sodium.
The discussion of the Draft Guidelines on Formulated Supplementary Foods for Older Infants and Young Children was also given much attention in the debate. These products are to complement locally available foodstuffs that either do not contain the necessary nutrients or only in inadequate quantities. They play a significant role in developing countries, in particular, and are intended to help prevent malnutrition in infants and young children. Considerable progress was made in these efforts. The draft guidelines shall now be presented to the Codex Alimentarius Commission for adoption at step 5.
Further issues addressed at the 33rd session of the CCNFSDU included the review of nutrient-labelling reference values for vitamins and minerals in the light of scientific progress, the revision of the general principles governing the addition of nutrients to food and the inclusion of specific rules for such products for underweight young children to the Codex Standard for Processed Cereal-Based Foods for Infants and Young Children.
The 34th meeting of the CCNFSDU will be held in Germany from 3-7 December 2012.
