Outcome of the 34th Session of the Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses

The 34th Session of the Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses (CCNFSDU) was held from 3 to 7 December 2012 in Bad Soden am Taunus and chaired by Dr. Pia Noble, Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMELV).
274 delegates and observers from 62 member states, from one member organisation (European Union) and from 31 international non-governmental organisations attended the meeting that was opened by a welcoming address delivered by Mr. Peter Bleser, Parliamentary State Secretary, BMELV. Division 313 of the BMELV was in charge of organising the CCNFSDU meeting which has been hosted by Germany since the committee was established in 1966.

Discussions focused on current topics such as the draft Revision of the Guidelines on Formu-lated Supplementary Foods for Older Infants and Young Children. These products are in-tended to supplement locally available foodstuffs that either do not contain the necessary nu-trients or only in inadequate quantities. The participants at this year’s session were able to finalise the deliberations on these guidelines which are of particular importance for developing countries. The Committee decided to recommend the document to the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) for adoption at Step 8.

Consensus was also reached with regard to the adoption and consolidation of the General Principles for Establishing Nutrient Reference Values (NRVs) of vitamins and Minerals and for Nutrients Associated with Diet-Related Diseases (in each case for the purpose of Nutrition Labelling). These principles will now be recommended to the CAC for adoption. In addition, the adoption of appropriate NRVs for sodium (2g) and saturated fatty acids (20g) will be rec-ommended to the CAC. In the case of both nutrients, an association with diet-related diseases is considered based on evidence.

Progress was also made with the revision of existing NRVs for Vitamins and Minerals. The Committee decided that the NRVs that were revised by an electronic working group should be recommended to the CAC for adoption at Step 5/8.

In addition, there was a discussion about the Revision of the General Principles for the Addi-tion of Essential Nutrients to Foods.

Another topic, put forward by India, was the proposed Amendment of the Codex Standard for Processed Cereal-Based Foods to include special provisions for cereal-based products for undernourished infants and young children. The discussion will be continued in an electronic working group chaired by India with the support of Botswana.

In addition, the Committee agreed to New Zealand’s recommendation for a Review of the Codex Standard (CODEX STAN 156-1987) for Follow-Up Formula. A corresponding project document will be submitted to the CAC for agreement.

The 35th Session of the CCNFSDU will be held from 4 to 8 November 2013 in Germany.
